Walking in L.A.

Nobody walks in L.A.

Congratulations Steve Carell?

Yahoo! TV apparently watched the Emmys last night in fast-forward. In probably the funniest part of last nights broadcast, after an impassioned morality skit about making sure this years Emmys were truly green, Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert presented the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. The winner was Ricky Gervais, from HBO’s Extras. As Ricky Gervais was conspicuously absent, Stewart said that Gervais isn’t here tonight “so we’re giving it to our friend Steve Carell.” After which, Steve Carell leaped out of the audience and ran up to Colbert and Stewart. All three yelled and hugged and ran offstage together.

This morning I checked the winners list, here’s what I saw (emphasis mine):

Someone at Yahoo! didn’t get the joke. Whoops.

I’ve been on hiatus for the summer. This is part one of “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” from July 23rd.

12 of 12: September

12 of 12 is the brainchild of Chad, who cast me as an extra once or twice in a show or two back in the day. He and others have been doing this for a few years, this is my first contribution.

Mornin'

8:01 am - Been lazy long enough

Egg White McWholeWheatMuffin

9:59 am - Back from the gym, breakfast is my Egg White McWholeWheatMuffin.

12 of 12 research

10:18 am - Since this is my first 12 of 12, I thought I should review past 12 of 12s for inspiration/motivation. (”12 of 12s”? Or is it “12s of 12″? Chad, what’s the plural of 12 of 12?)

Trader Joe's

1:23 pm - After lunch, stopped at Trader Joe’s for a random assortment of staples. Romaine hearts, garbanzo beans and whole wheat pasta.

Lunch leftovers

1:34 pm - Cyndi and I went to lunch at Burning Bonzai, but I forgot to take a picture. Cyn had an insanely large plate of Teriaki Chicken, so we brought a box home.

Ironing

2:55 pm - A rare event, I’m ironing my shirt HOURS before I have to leave for work instead of the usual 5 minutes before running out the door.

Mythbusting break

3:58 pm - I take a Mythbusters break. Can’t get enough of that damn show.

I really do work here

5:14 pm - I get to work. It still blows my mind a little that they PAY me to hang out here and be a geek all day.

The view from work

8:04 pm - On top of being paid to be a geek all day, I’m also treated nightly to the best view in L.A.

Foucault Pendulum

9:11 pm - The Foucault Pendulum. Science break: The Foucault Pendulum demonstrates the rotation of the earth. The pendulum swings independently of the earths rotation, so though it appears that the pendulum rotates clockwise in the pit once every 42 hours, it’s actually the earth rotating counterclockwise underneath the pendulum once every 42 hours. Why 42 hours? Come visit me at the Observatory and I’ll tell you. Or I guess you could look it up.

Me in front of Griffith

9:20 pm - A quick break. Got to look through the telescopes on the lawn (to the right and behind me). Tonight we were looking at Jupiter and the four Galilean Moons and Alberio, a really cool double star.

Astronomer's Monument

10:11 pm - Finally, on my way out to the car I pass the Astronomers Monument on the front lawn.

Bonus Picture: “Unexpected”

IMG_1497

8:19 am - A visitor next to my front door. He was there when I left for the gym, there when I came back an hour and a half later. Still there when I took laundry down 30 minutes after that, then gone when I went to retrieve the laundry.

Shoe Sale

Yesterday, I was shopping for new running shoes. Taking a casual glance over the MEN’S CLEARANCE table, I see many battered shoe boxes, never more than three or four of the same style. Generally, the odds and ends and leftover sizes of discontinued styles. Then, at the end of the table, my eye catches a huge stack of pristine orange Nike boxes. A closer look shows that all the labels on the boxes are for the same style shoe in any size you could want. Intrigued, I look even closer and I see why:
